The interfaith wedding of Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal in 2024 sparked widespread discussion online, with some rumors
suggesting that Sonakshi's parents, Shatrughan and Poonam Sinha, disapproved. Speculation also arose that her brothers,
Luv and Kush, boycotted the event to show their displeasure with her marrying her 'Double XL' co-star. However,
Sonakshi's parents actively participated in all wedding events.
Recently, about a year and a half after the wedding, Poonam Sinha shared her experiences during a conversation with
Farah Khan at the couple's home. Farah Khan inquired whether Poonam knew about Sonakshi and Zaheer's five-year courtship
before their engagement. Poonam admitted she was unaware. Sonakshi playfully called out her mother's honesty, stating
that Poonam was the first person she confided in, but that Poonam had kept it from Shatrughan. Sonakshi clarified that
she had revealed the relationship two years prior and spent that time persuading her father to accept Zaheer. Zaheer
added that Poonam had suspected something for the five years before that. Poonam confirmed this, explaining that she
noticed Sonakshi's unusual attentiveness and helpfulness.
The conversation also touched on the meeting between the mothers, Poonam Sinha and Zaheer’s mother, Mumtaz Ratansi.
Sonakshi revealed that the meeting occurred well before the wedding at a party hosted by Huma Qureshi, where all the
parents were invited for an informal introduction, though they were unaware of the couple's relationship. Poonam added
that she suspected something because she noticed Sonakshi sitting at Mumtaz's feet. Farah joked about children never
sitting at their own mother's feet.
In a recent interview with ETimes, Sonakshi addressed the initial negativity surrounding her interfaith marriage and how
public perception has since shifted. She stated that she believes love conquers all and that the negativity faded after
people saw the couple's genuine affection for each other. She emphasized that she simply married the man she loved and
that she hopes her decision inspires others.
