OnePlus has officially released its latest smartphone, the OnePlus 15R, in India, adding another contender to the
competitive premium smartphone market. Positioned as a “value flagship,” the 15R aims to deliver a high-end experience
without the top-tier price tag. This strategy is common in the Android market, where manufacturers seek to capture
consumers who desire premium features but are unwilling to pay flagship prices. The OnePlus 15R attempts to strike this
balance through a combination of powerful components and strategic compromises.
The design and software of the OnePlus 15R closely mirror the flagship OnePlus 15, offering a familiar user experience.
It runs the same OxygenOS version and has a similar aesthetic. Despite having comparable dimensions to the Nord 5, the
15R incorporates more premium materials, giving it a more refined feel. This consistency in design language across the
OnePlus lineup helps maintain brand recognition and user familiarity.
The display is a 6.83-inch LTPS Super AMOLED panel with a 1.5K resolution, capable of a 165Hz refresh rate. However, the
165Hz refresh rate is only supported in a limited number of games. For most other uses, the display operates at 120Hz.
LTPS (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) technology is commonly used in smartphone displays to offer faster
response times and higher resolutions. Unlike more advanced LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) panels, LTPS
cannot dynamically adjust the refresh rate down to 1Hz to conserve power, limiting the panel to a minimum of 60Hz. This
is a compromise that impacts battery efficiency.
Under the hood, the OnePlus 15R boasts the brand-new Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset, making it the first phone to feature
this processor. While not the “Elite” variant, the chip delivers performance comparable to last year's flagship phones.
This provides smooth daily usage and solid gaming performance, enhanced by a new 360-degree cooling system. However,
some users may find that heat management could be improved during extended gaming sessions, which is a common challenge
for high-performance smartphones.
Battery life is a standout feature of the OnePlus 15R, thanks to its massive 7,400mAh battery – even larger than the one
in the flagship OnePlus 15. This translates to excellent endurance, potentially lasting up to two days with moderate use
or a day and a half with heavy use. The phone supports 80W SuperVOOC charging, which, while slower than the OnePlus 15's
120W system, is still fast enough for most users. This focus on battery life is a significant selling point for
consumers who prioritize longevity between charges.
The camera system represents a step down from the flagship model. The OnePlus 15R features a dual rear camera setup with
a 50MP main sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide lens. Notably, it lacks a telephoto lens, a feature that was present in last
year's 13R. While the main camera delivers good detail, contrast, and colors, the absence of a telephoto lens limits
versatility, particularly for photography enthusiasts. This is a clear compromise made to achieve the lower price point.
Despite its mid-premium positioning, the OnePlus 15R maintains a focus on durability and security. It carries IP68 and
IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance, matching the flagship model. It also includes an ultrasonic fingerprint
sensor for quick unlocking. However, instead of Corning’s Gorilla Glass, OnePlus has opted for its custom Panda glass,
which may not be as resistant to drops.
The OnePlus 15R is available in three colors: Charcoal Black, Mint Breeze, and Electric Violet. The 12GB RAM with 256GB
storage variant is priced at Rs 47,999, while the 12GB RAM with 512GB storage variant costs Rs 52,999. An instant
discount of Rs 3,000 is available for Axis and HDFC bank card users, bringing the effective starting price down to Rs
44,999. Additionally, customers receive free OnePlus Nord Buds 3 worth Rs 2,299 as part of the launch offer.
The OnePlus 15R presents an interesting option for Indian consumers seeking a balance between flagship-level performance
and a more accessible price. Its focus on battery life and processing power, coupled with compromises in the camera
system, defines its position in the market. The device is now available for purchase on Amazon India, marking another
chapter in OnePlus's strategy to cater to diverse consumer needs.
