While celebrity wedding dresses like those of Kate Middleton, Kim Kardashian, and Priyanka Chopra often garner praise,

one fashion historian argues that another gown surpasses them all in extravagance. According to Mae Sharifi, a content

creator specializing in fashion and history, the most dramatic wedding dress of all time belonged to Queen Charlotta of

Sweden, not Princess Diana or any modern celebrity.

In a December 13 post, Sharifi highlighted the wedding gown of Edwidge Elisabeth Charlotte Holstein-Gottorp (Queen

Charlotta of Sweden), who married Prince Karl, the brother of King Gustav III of Sweden. Sharifi argues it is the most

beautiful ever made.

Worn in 1774 when Charlotta married her cousin Charles, Duke of Södermanland, the dress was inspired by Marie

Antoinette's wedding attire. The royal marriage occurred because the King was unable to produce an heir.

The gown itself was crafted from silver cloth and elaborately embroidered with diamonds. It featured multiple layers,

shimmering silver spangles, a meticulously detailed bodice, and oversized panniers, creating a truly over-the-top

effect.

As noted in a February 2023 Instagram post by Defunct Fashion, the dress is also notable for its remarkably small waist.

The post also highlights the less celebratory detail that Charlotta was only 14 years old at the time of her marriage.
