A business jet crashed at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina on Thursday, erupting in a large fireball.
According to a Facebook post by the airport, the accident occurred during landing at approximately 10:15 a.m.
Airport officials stated that the FAA is responding to the scene and will lead the investigation. The aircraft was
identified by the FAA, according to the Associated Press, as a Cessna C550 business jet.
While the exact number of people on board remains unconfirmed, the Iredell County Sheriff, Grant Campbell, told AP that
there were fatalities as a result of the crash. He did not specify the number of deaths. Local media outlets have shown
videos of emergency responders at the scene, battling flames amid the wreckage.
Statesville Regional Airport's website indicates it serves corporate aviation needs for Fortune 500 companies and NASCAR
teams. Statesville is located roughly 45 miles north of Charlotte.
