The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is initiating a review of the U-19 team's performance at the recent

Asia Cup, following a significant loss to Pakistan in the final. This decision comes after the team, featuring players

with IPL exposure like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, suffered a 191-run defeat, failing to secure their ninth

title in the tournament.

Pakistan's dominant performance, highlighted by Sameer Minhas's impressive 172, set a formidable target of 347/8. The

Indian batting lineup struggled in response, collapsing for 156 in 26.2 overs against Pakistan's pace attack, led by Ali

Reza, Mohammad Sayyam, and Abdul Subhan. Suryavanshi, who had previously scored a century against UAE, managed 26, while

Mhatre was dismissed for 2.

The review, prompted by the Apex Council, signals a move beyond the standard post-tournament report. The BCCI is

expected to engage in discussions with head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and captain Ayush Mhatre to understand the factors

contributing to the team's performance. While the team manager routinely submits a report to the BCCI after tournaments,

this instance marks a deeper dive into the team's strategies and execution.

Beyond on-field performance, the review may also address conduct-related issues. The final match saw heated exchanges

between Indian players, including Mhatre and Suryavanshi, and their Pakistani counterparts. It remains unclear whether

these incidents will be formally addressed during the review process.

This evaluation is particularly significant as the U-19 team is currently preparing for the U-19 World Cup scheduled for

January-February 2026. The findings from the review are expected to inform the team's preparations and strategies

leading up to the global event. Mhatre acknowledged inconsistencies in the bowling during the final match and

highlighted the tournament's value in identifying players who stepped up. The BCCI review will likely aim to build on

these observations, identifying areas for improvement and optimization ahead of the World Cup.

The upcoming discussions will likely focus on the team's tactical approach, player performance under pressure, and the

effectiveness of the coaching strategies. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure the U-19 team is well-prepared and

positioned for success in the upcoming World Cup.
