Yamaha R2 is set to join the fiercely contested 200cc class, a space poised for strong growth in the coming years

Yamaha R2 will be entering the competitive 200cc segment, which has significant future growth potential
To expand options for sport bike enthusiasts, Yamaha is working on a new 200cc faired motorcycle. As per the brand’s naming convention, the R2 name has been trademarked in multiple global markets such as Europe, New Zealand, Australia and Philippines. In the latest development, Yamaha has trademarked the YZF-R2 name in India as well. When launched, the YZF-R2 will take on rivals such as KTM RC 200, Bajaj Pulsar RS 200 and Hero Karizma XMR. Let’s check out the details.
Yamaha YZF-R2 – What to expect?
Yamaha’s entry-level sport bikes are quite popular across Asian markets including India. Globally, the upcoming YZF-R2 will fill the gap between the YZF-R15 and the YZF-R25. In India, the gap is much wider with no options between the R15 and the 321cc R3. This creates a strong case for the Yamaha R2 in the Indian market.
With the R2 name now registered in India, launch could be possible soon, likely in 2026. However, there is currently no official confirmation regarding the same. In terms of its styling, one can expect a similar sporty flair as seen with other sport bikes from Yamaha. Key features could include a dual headlamp setup, sharp LED DRLs, aggressive front fascia, sculpted fuel tank, muscular fairing, split seats and an upswept exhaust. A committed riding stance is expected with the Yamaha R2.
Upcoming Yamaha YZF-R2 could get a comprehensive range of tech features. Key highlights could include a traction control system (TCS) and a comprehensive range of connectivity features. The bike is expected to get a full colour TFT screen, which will display a range of information. Riding modes could also be offered with the YZF-R2.
Yamaha YZF-R2 – Engine, specs estimates
Yamaha YZF-R2 can appeal to enthusiasts who are looking for a better overall performance in comparison to the R15. The latter gets power from a 155 cc, liquid-cooled, SOHC engine that generates 18.4 PS and 14.2 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed constant mesh transmission. Upcoming Yamaha R2 could generate around 24-25 PS and 18-19 Nm of torque.
Compared to rivals, the KTM RC 200 has a 199.5 cc, single cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that generates 25 PS and 19.2 Nm of torque. Bajaj Pulsar RS 200 has output of 24.5 PS and 18.7 Nm. Hero Karizma XMR is another powerful machine in its segment, generating 25.5 PS and 20.4 Nm.
For a seamless riding experience, the upcoming Yamaha YZF-R2 is expected to get features like Variable Valve Actuation (VVA), an assist and slipper clutch and quickshifter. The bike will have USD front forks and a monoshock rear suspension. 17-inch wheels are expected at both ends. Braking setup will comprise disc brakes at both ends and dual-channel ABS will be offered as standard. Yamaha YZF-R2 could be launched at a starting price of around Rs 2 lakh.
