Tonight marks the end of an era as John Cena, the 17-time world champion, concludes his legendary career at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
The card for tonight's Saturday Night's Main Event is packed with current and future WWE stars, headlined by Cena's final appearance. While specific details about a post-match ceremony are unconfirmed, it's widely anticipated that WWE will honor Cena, arguably one of the greatest performers in the company's history, as he bids farewell.
Cena's last match will be a one-on-one showdown against Gunther, a former two-time world champion and the longest-reigning Intercontinental champion ever. Gunther is already a prominent figure in WWE's future, and a victory over Cena in his farewell match would be a significant milestone.
In an interview with Stephen A. Smith, Gunther shared his perspective: "I mean, I can only speak for myself. And I haven’t really—I shook hands twice with [Cena], I didn’t really have any interactions with him otherwise. I just remember when I started wrestling, like 20 years ago now, I remember that I hated that guy in jorts on that TV week by week. And I always thought it doesn’t belong in the ring."
Gunther added, "I’m a big purist, I’m a big traditionalist. And I said it on Monday, John Cena’s definitely the greatest sports entertainer of all time. But I’m the greatest professional wrestler there is right now, so that’s going to be the conflict."
Gunther joins fellow NXT alumni Oba Femi, Sol Ruca, Leon Slater, and Je’Von Evans on a night that promises to be an emotional celebration of WWE's past, present, and future.
