Virat Kohli's participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy highlights BCCI's emphasis on domestic cricket and its impact on player form and preparation.

Virat Kohli has been spotted at Mumbai airport, signaling his return to domestic cricket as he prepares to represent Delhi in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. This move, commencing on December 24, aligns with the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) renewed focus on ensuring that centrally contracted Indian players participate more actively in domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has confirmed that Rishabh Pant will captain the Delhi side, with Kohli available for the initial two matches. The squad also includes experienced players such as Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini. Harshit Rana, currently part of the Indian T20I setup, will join the team upon his release. Delhi is placed in Group D and scheduled to play seven matches, with their campaign concluding on January 8.

Kohli's return to domestic cricket arrives on the heels of a strong performance in One Day Internationals (ODIs). He concluded the year as India’s highest run-scorer in the format, accumulating 651 runs across 13 matches at an average of 65.10. This included three centuries, four half-centuries, and a strike rate approaching 96, showcasing his continued relevance and impact in white-ball cricket. His form experienced a notable resurgence starting with the Australia series, where an unbeaten 74 in Sydney seemed to alleviate pressure after two consecutive ducks. This momentum continued into the home series against South Africa, where he scored centuries in the first two ODIs (135 in Ranchi and 102 in Raipur) and then secured the series with an unbeaten 65 in Vizag during a chase of 271.

The BCCI's strategic push for greater participation in domestic cricket aims to keep Indian cricketers in competitive 'game mode'. Kohli's inclusion in the Vijay Hazare Trophy provides him with match practice and opportunities to refine his skills in a different competitive environment. This aligns with the broader objective of maintaining player sharpness and readiness for international assignments. The Vijay Hazare Trophy provides a platform for Kohli to maintain his form and contribute to Delhi's campaign, while also setting an example for other players to prioritize domestic cricket.
