WakeMed is implementing seasonal visitor restrictions beginning December 22 to protect patients from the flu and RSV. Children under 12 are restricted.

To minimize the spread of illness during flu season, WakeMed facilities will implement visitor restrictions starting December 22.

As of that date, children under the age of 12 will not be permitted to visit patients in WakeMed hospital nursing units, patient care areas, or waiting rooms. This policy aims to prevent the transmission of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and the flu.

The restrictions apply to several locations, including Healthplex emergency departments and WakeMed Mental Health and Well-Being Hospital – WakeBrook.

A WakeMed spokesperson acknowledged the difficulty these restrictions may pose for families. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. they emphasized the hospital's commitment to patient safety, stating that limiting visitation is a crucial clinical practice for preventing the spread of viruses within healthcare facilities.
