Tilak Varma backs India's flexible batting order, emphasizing situational awareness and the team's focus on fundamental techniques in T20Is.
Ahead of the third T20I, Indian middle-order batsman Tilak Varma addressed questions about the team's batting strategy, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and clear roles within the squad. Varma, who scored a noteworthy 62 in a previous loss, highlighted the team's willingness to adjust.
"Everyone is flexible, except the openers," Varma stated. "I'm prepared to bat at 3, 4, 5, or 6, wherever the opportunity arises. Everyone understands that we're all flexible in the batting order."
Varma, 23, has primarily batted at number three or four for India, achieving considerable success in those positions. Both of his T20I centuries were scored from the number three position against South Africa last November.
He specifically mentioned Axar Patel, recalling instances where promoting him up the order proved beneficial, such as in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final. In that crucial match, Axar batted at No. 5 and contributed a quick 47 off 31 balls, boosting India's scoring rate.
"As you've seen, Axar Patel has already done this in the (T20) World Cup and performed well in that role," Varma noted.
"As I said, everyone is flexible. We make decisions based on what the team believes will be most advantageous on any given day."
Varma further supported the flexible batting order principle, emphasizing the continued focus on fundamental techniques.
"We've been practicing these techniques since childhood, so it doesn't significantly impact our practice. We stick to the basics. As I mentioned, mindset is crucial. If you're mentally strong, you'll find success anywhere."
