Director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found murdered in their home. Their son, Nick Reiner, is in custody and charged with the crime.
A shocking family tragedy has struck Hollywood, allegedly involving director Rob Reiner and his family. His son, Nick Reiner, is accused of murdering Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, following a heated argument that began at a Christmas party.
Sources indicate the dispute, stemming from concerns about Nick's mental health and a possible relapse into drug addiction, escalated into violence. Nick Reiner, who has a history of substance abuse and reported violent behavior, has been arrested and charged with the murders.
The incident reportedly began with an awkward situation at Conan O'Brien's holiday party. Witnesses say Nick's erratic behavior at the party alarmed guests, reviving long-standing worries about his well-being. Friends of the family reported that Rob and Michele left the party fearful of what Nick might do.
The following day, police discovered Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner dead inside their Los Angeles home. Authorities allege that Nick Reiner, 49, murdered his parents after the argument at the party. He is accused of fatally slitting their throats and stabbing them. Sources told The Post that the argument at the party was triggered by Nick's alleged return to drugs and his refusal to seek further treatment, despite having been in rehab at least 17 times since the age of 15.
Nick's sister, Romy, 28, found their parents' bodies on Sunday afternoon. She identified her brother as a suspect, telling investigators he is dangerous. Nick was taken into custody and charged with murder. He is being held without bail and is under suicide watch.
In September, the family made their last public appearance together at the Spinal Tap II premiere in Los Angeles. Those present were Nick, Romy, Jake, and their parents.
Nick Reiner has struggled with drug addiction for much of his life, even experiencing homelessness at times. In 2015, he started an environmental non-profit, Save Malibu, which closed within a year. A cast member from his semi-autobiographical film "Being Charlie," which Rob directed, described Nick as a "nepo-baby" and said his parents did everything to help him. A security guard in Brentwood stated that Nick had been living with his parents for at least a year and seemed "a little off."
The news of the murders has deeply affected the film community. Kathy Bates, who starred in Reiner's film "Misery," expressed her devastation. Director Ron Howard offered condolences, calling Reiner a superlative filmmaker and dedicated citizen.
