Polish border guards discovered a tunnel used to smuggle over 180 migrants from Belarus. Two drivers suspected of people smuggling are in custody.
Polish authorities have uncovered a tunnel used to smuggle migrants from Belarus into Poland. Border Guard officers revealed that over 180 foreign nationals illegally crossed the border using the underground passage.
The tunnel ran under a dam near Narewka, in the Podlasie region. It was discovered thanks to integrated electronic surveillance systems, which alerted border guards as the migrants emerged on Polish soil. Authorities apprehended over 130 individuals, and the search continues for the remaining migrants.
The tunnel is approximately 100 meters long and 1.5 meters high. The entrance, concealed within the forest on the Belarusian side, was located about 50 meters from the border. The exit point was just 10 meters inside Polish territory.
Border officials reported that soldiers, police, and tracking dogs assisted in the operation, leading to the swift capture of most of the migrants. Those apprehended were primarily from Afghanistan and Pakistan, with smaller numbers from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
In connection with the incident, two drivers were detained: a 69-year-old Polish citizen and a 49-year-old Lithuanian national. They are suspected of transporting the migrants further into Western Europe. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
This is the fourth such tunnel discovered this year by officers of the Podlaskie Branch of the Border Guard.
The Border Guard emphasized that the combination of electronic surveillance and physical security measures enabled them to quickly respond to this attempt to breach the border.
