The countdown to the U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2026, co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia, has begun with the unveiling of the trophy.

The journey to the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia, officially kicks off with the unveiling of the tournament trophy. The competition is scheduled from January 15th to February 6th and will showcase 16 teams, including Tanzania making their debut on the world stage.

Former Zimbabwe captain Tatenda Taibu, a veteran of 195 appearances across all formats and a former U19 World Cup player himself, has been named the tournament ambassador. He will serve as an inspiration to young cricketers, drawing from his own experiences progressing from youth cricket to becoming a national icon.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, acting Permanent Secretary Cynthia Mawema hailed the tournament as a momentous occasion for African cricket. She emphasized that it represents a global celebration of young talent.

"This is more than just another event; it's a global festival," Mawema stated. "Zimbabwe and Namibia will provide an unforgettable experience."

She added that the tournament is expected to inspire young people, strengthen cricket development, attract new fans, and showcase Zimbabwe as a premier sporting destination ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

Zimbabwe Cricket Vice Chairman Sylvester Matshaka, standing in for Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani, expressed gratitude to the ICC for entrusting the country with the responsibility of hosting another major international event.

"Hosting this global youth tournament with Namibia is a great honor," Matshaka said. "The U19 World Cup is a platform where future stars emerge, and we are thrilled that the class of 2026 will showcase their talent on our grounds."

Tournament Director Hamilton Masakadza confirmed that preparations are well underway in Harare and Bulawayo. Venues, logistics, and accommodation are all secured. He also announced that admission to all matches will be free, encouraging fans nationwide to attend and experience the excitement of the tournament.

"We want everyone to come and experience the excitement. Entry to all matches is completely free," Masakadza stated.

Matches in Zimbabwe will be held at Harare Sports Club, Takashinga Cricket Club, and Queens Sports Club, while Namibia will host games in Windhoek.

In anticipation of the tournament, the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup trophy will tour Masvingo, Bulawayo, and Harare from January 4th to 7th.

Cricket Namibia representatives, including Vice Chairman Polly Negongo, joined the launch event. Negongo conveyed Namibia's pride in co-hosting the tournament and underscored its significance in inspiring the next generation of Namibian cricketers.

"Namibia is proud and excited to co-host this prestigious global event alongside Zimbabwe. Hosting a World Cup is a moment of national significance and a powerful opportunity to inspire young cricketers in Namibia," said Negongo.

Defending champions Australia will be aiming to retain the trophy they won in the 2024 edition after defeating India.
