Ex-India batter Sanjay Bangar advises Shubman Gill to prioritize stability and classic cricketing shots over aggressive hitting, especially early in the innings.
Former Indian batsman Sanjay Bangar has urged Shubman Gill to prioritize a steady approach and focus on solid cricketing shots, rather than attempting to hit big from the start. Bangar believes Gill's primary role should be to see off the new ball and absorb any early pressure, setting the stage for more explosive batsmen later in the innings.
Bangar's advice comes after Gill's recent struggles in the T20I series against South Africa.
Speaking on JioStar, Bangar emphasized that Gill's main objective should be to provide stability at the top of the order. He highlighted the presence of power hitters like Hardik Pandya, Jitesh Sharma, and Shivam Dube in the middle and lower order. According to Bangar, Gill should concentrate on navigating the initial overs and handling pressure situations, particularly in tight or low-scoring matches.
"I’d clarify his role: there’s no need for big shots," Bangar stated. "Stick to proper cricketing strokes when you have so many fast scorers behind you. Lay the platform, particularly in crunch situations or low-scoring games. India needs someone who can handle the new ball and survive early breakthroughs, like that first-ball dismissal."
