The Ursid meteor shower, the final celestial event of 2025, is approaching its peak activity, offering stargazers a chance to spot meteors.
As 2025 draws to a close, the skies continue to offer spectacular events. Following recent comet sightings and a lunar flash, the Ursid meteor shower is set to become the year's final display. The good news for skywatchers is that the Ursids will soon reach their period of maximum activity, promising the best viewing conditions.
The Ursids originate from comet 8P/Tuttle. This comet, approximately 4 kilometers in diameter, was first discovered in 1790 by Pierre Méchain and has been observed numerous times since, most recently in 2021. Although the meteor shower shares the comet's orbital path, the Ursid swarm follows its own independent trajectory.
Skywatchers can observe the Ursids between December 17 and December 26, 2025. While it's an annual event, don't expect a show quite as intense as the earlier Geminids. Observers can anticipate seeing around 10 meteors per hour, increasing to a peak rate of approximately 50 meteors per hour on December 22, 2025.
