An 11-year-old girl's heartwarming reaction to receiving a heart transplant after waiting over 200 days at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital.
An incredibly touching video captured the moment 11-year-old Ava shared the news with her father: she was finally getting a heart transplant.
"Daddy, I’m getting a heart!" she exclaimed.
Ava's journey began at birth in 2014, as she was born with multiple heart defects. At just six days old, she underwent her first open-heart surgery. Last year, when she was ten, a sinus infection worsened, leading to heart failure and her placement on the transplant list.
After more than 200 days of waiting at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital in Ohio, Ava's mother, Jamie, received the life-changing call in March 2025: a heart was available. Ava was eager to tell her father, Sean, who was at home with her younger sister.
"I was so excited and couldn’t believe it was actually happening," Ava later said.
The transplant surgery, performed by Dr. Hani Najm, a pediatric and congenital heart surgeon, took place that same month. After eight months in the hospital, Ava was finally able to go home.
"Hearing Ava say those words, ‘I’m getting a heart’, was overwhelming,” her father said. “After everything she’d been through, we were finally one step closer to coming home for good.”
