Tata Motors is gearing up to introduce petrol power to its flagship SUVs — Harrier and Safari — for the first time. Ahead of the official launch, the Harrier Petrol has now been spotted at a dealership, giving us the clearest look yet at the production-ready model. The SUV seen on-site carries Tata’s all-new 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol engine, marking a major step toward expanding the Harrier’s market reach.
1.5L Hyperion Turbo-Petrol Engine Confirmed
Under the hood, the dealership unit proudly displays the HYPERION branding on the new engine cover. This 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, direct-injection turbo petrol motor was first showcased at Auto Expo 2023, delivering 170 PS and 280 Nm. It has been in development for over five years and will finally make its way into mass-market Tata SUVs.
The new turbo-petrol will likely be offered with manual and automatic transmission options — the Harrier spotted here is equipped with an automatic gearbox. Considering that Tata has not offered the same engine in Manual with Sierra, it remains to be seen if Harrier and Safari get a manual option with petrol engine or not.
A More Accessible Harrier
Until now, Harrier and Safari were diesel-only, limiting their appeal in a segment where rivals like Scorpio N, XUV700, Alcazar and Hector all offer petrol options. The new Hyperion petrol variants will allow Tata to target a much wider customer base.
The petrol engine is also expected to be manufactured at the Stellantis–Tata joint facility in Ranjangaon, where the current 2.0-litre diesel engine is built. Interestingly, this new 1.5L turbo petrol could also be shared with Jeep Compass and Meridian in the future.
Exterior and Interior: No Major Changes
The Harrier Petrol retains the familiar design language of the current facelifted model:
• Signature connected LED tail-lamp bar
• Blacked-out elements and sharp body lines
• “HARRIER” lettering on the side fenders
• Identical cabin layout with digital screens and premium materials
Interestingly, when one of our reader Adarsh Tomar asked Tata Motors customer care regarding the launch, they said that as of now there is no official update regarding the launch of Harrier or Safari petrol.
Expected Pricing
The Harrier Petrol — along with the Safari Petrol — is expected to launch in the coming days. Prices for the petrol variants are likely to undercut the diesel lineup, making the Harrier more competitive in the segment.
Current diesel prices start at:
• Harrier Diesel MT : Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom)
• Harrier Diesel AT : Rs 18.53 lakh (ex-showroom)
• Safari Diesel MT: Rs 14.66 lakh (ex-showroom)
• Safari Diesel AT: Rs 18.91 lakh (ex-showroom)
The petrol manual variants should start lower, offering a new entry point for buyers. But if there is no manual option with Harrier or Safari petrol, in that case the starting price could be higher than the manual diesel variants, but lower than diesel auto variants.
