Police have identified a father and his son as the suspects in the Bondi Beach terror attack that killed 15. The father was killed at the scene.
Sydney police have identified the perpetrators of Sunday's deadly shooting at Bondi Beach as a father and his adult son. The attack, which occurred on the first evening of Hanukkah, resulted in 15 fatalities and numerous hospitalizations.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon announced at a Monday morning press conference that the suspects were a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son. While the names of the individuals were not released, Lanyon confirmed that the father died at the scene. The son was critically wounded by police and remains hospitalized.
According to Commissioner Lanyon, authorities had limited prior knowledge of either man, and neither had a documented history of criminal offenses. He stated that the investigation is ongoing to determine their motives and any potential ideological affiliations.
The attack, which targeted a Hanukkah celebration at the popular tourist destination, has sparked outrage among Jewish communities in Australia and worldwide. Global leaders have also voiced their condemnation.
While Lanyon declared the incident a terrorist attack on Sunday night, he refrained from speculating on the gunmen's motives or connections on Monday, citing the need for further investigation.
Commissioner Lanyon revealed that the older suspect possessed a firearms license for approximately ten years and had six registered weapons. All six firearms were recovered from the scene, and ballistics testing will be conducted to ascertain if they match those registered to the father and used in the attack. Furthermore, police discovered two rudimentary but functional improvised explosive devices at the site.
