Russia launched a massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing widespread power outages and injuries in multiple regions.
Ukraine's energy infrastructure was once again the target of a large-scale Russian attack Friday night into Saturday morning, according to Ukrainian officials. The assault involved both missiles and drones.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on X that crews were working to restore electricity and water in affected communities. He said the main targets were the energy sector, particularly in the south of Ukraine and the Odesa region.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia used nearly 500 drones and missiles in the combined strike aimed at critical infrastructure facilities overnight.
The attack consisted of 465 drones and 30 missiles launched from air, sea, and ground. The Odesa region was the primary focus, according to the Air Force.
Ukrainian forces reported shooting down or suppressing 417 drones and 13 missiles. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. 33 drones and eight missiles hit targets in 18 locations, while downed drones fell in three locations. The Air Force is investigating the impact sites of six additional missiles that did not reach their intended targets.
Zelenskyy reported that two people were injured in the Odesa region. Thousands of families in the Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Chernihiv regions are without power.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy confirmed that the Russian strikes specifically targeted electricity generation, distribution, and transmission facilities.
