Ranveer Singh issued an apology after facing criticism for mimicking a scene from Rishab Shetty's Kantara: Chapter 1 at IFFI, emphasising his respect for the film and clarifying that his act was intended as a tribute.

Actor Ranveer Singh has publicly apologised after criticism erupted over his mimicry of a pivotal scene from Rishab Shetty's Kantara: Chapter 1 during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 closing ceremony in Goa. The incident drew attention because Rishab Shetty, the star of Kantara, was present in the audience at the time, and Singh’s act was perceived by many as insensitive, with additional controversy around his reference to daivas as 'ghosts'.

On Tuesday morning, Singh addressed the controversy by posting a statement on his Instagram Stories. He wrote, “My intention was to highlight Rishabh's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration (sic).”
Singh continued by expressing respect for cultural diversity, stating, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I've hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
The incident unfolded when Singh took to the stage and re-enacted Rishab Shetty’s Daiva performance from the climax of Kantara: Chapter 1, addressing Shetty directly and commending his work in the film. He said, "I watched Kantara Chapter 1 in theatres, and Rishab, it was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost (Chamundi daiva) enters your body - that shot was amazing."
While Rishab Shetty was seen laughing at the time, a section of social media users expressed disappointment, calling Singh’s comments and mimicry disrespectful towards cultural traditions depicted in the film. Some pointed to the mischaracterisation of daivas, which are regarded as forest deities, not ghosts, as a particular source of offence.
The reaction intensified when further footage surfaced showing Shetty warning Singh in the event not to mimic him, prompting additional backlash from fans.

The incident has garnered significant discussion online about the responsibilities of public figures when referencing culturally significant performances, especially at high-profile events. Singh’s apology has been widely circulated, with some users accepting his explanation while others continue to voice their concerns.
Rishab Shetty has not issued a formal public statement regarding the incident. The matter comes as Singh prepares for the release of his upcoming film, 'Dhurandhar', later this week.
