So what exactly happened? Ranveer Singh recently attended the IFFI closing ceremony in Goa. During the same time, as he addressed the audience, he was seen imitating Rishabh Shetty’s performance from ‘Kantara: Chapter 1.’ He mimicked the Daiva act and called the revered Daiva Chavundi a “female ghost”. This did not go down well with the netizens, who heavily criticized the actor. The matter escalated to a level where HJS members Pramod Tuyekar and Dilip Shetye submitted a memorandum for allegedly hurting Hindu religious sentiments.
“Chamundi Daiva is considered a sacred family deity of the Tulu community, and depicting or describing the deity in a derogatory manner amounts to disrespect. Such acts may cause public resentment and disturb peace,” the HJS said, according to PTI.
On December 2nd, taking to his social media handle, Ranveer Singh issued a public apology. He cleared that he never wanted to hurt any religious sentiments and was only trying to appreciate Rishabh’s work. He wrote, “My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration. I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
This was one of the first times Ranveer Singh landed in a controversy. He made his debut in 2010 with ‘Band Baaja Baaraat.’ He starred opposite Anushka Sharma, and their chemistry was the talk of the town. The duo back then appeared on an episode of Karan Johar’s ‘Koffee With Karan.’ During the same Ranveer Singh made an inappropriate comment on Anushka, which left the actress in an awkward state. He did apologise for his words on a light note, but faced massive backlash for being sexist and disrespectful.
