Rovman Powell expresses pride in his tenure as West Indies T20I captain, highlighting the team's rise in global rankings and his personal milestones.
Rovman Powell, the West Indies' hard-hitting middle-order batsman, prefers batting at No. 5, believing it allows him to construct an innings.
Powell has expressed his satisfaction with his time as captain of the West Indies T20I team. He noted that the team improved from ninth to third in the world rankings during his leadership, describing his stint as “pretty successful” and “very good.” He also takes pride in representing West Indies in over 100 T20I matches (107).
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo during an interaction organized by Dubai Capitals at the ongoing ILT20, Powell reflected on his career. He captained the West Indies in 37 T20Is from March 2023 to December 2024. His tenure included the 2024 T20 World Cup, which the West Indies co-hosted with the USA.
“A lot of the stuff in your career you didn't set out to achieve,” Powell stated. “You started with the ambition to play for West Indies. That was the goal. And now the global landscape of cricket has grown over the last 10-15 years so much where now you also play for different franchises around the world.”
He added, “I set out to play for West Indies, and now I've played over 100 T20I games - it's something that I'm grateful for. I've moved the team from ninth in the rankings to No. 3 in the world. Those are the little things that during the duration of your career you feel proud about. I've won franchise titles with various teams around the world. That is also something you feel proud about.
“My captaincy stint with the West Indies was very good - a pretty successful stint. [It's] something that I'm grateful for.”
