Pope Leo XIV will hold his first Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals at the Vatican in January 2026. The meeting aims to strengthen the Church.

Pope Leo XIV's first Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals is scheduled for January 7-8, 2026, at the Vatican, according to the Holy See Press Office.

The announcement, released on Saturday, described the gathering as a time for "communion and fraternity," with opportunities for "reflection, sharing, and prayer."

During the two-day event, the Cardinals will join Pope Leo XIV in prayer and reflection, offering counsel on governing the Church. The Consistory's purpose is to encourage discernment and provide support to the Pope as he carries out his duties within the universal Church.

The statement explained that the Consistory is intended to reinforce the relationship between the Bishop of Rome and the Cardinals, who are called upon to assist in the well-being of the global Church.

This meeting of Cardinals will occur just after Pope Leo XIV closes the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica on January 6, which is the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord.

What is a Consistory?

A Consistory, derived from the Latin term "consistere" meaning "stand together," is a formal assembly of the College of Cardinals. Consistories can be either Ordinary or Extraordinary.

Ordinary Consistories are primarily ceremonial and typically involve Cardinals residing in Rome. Extraordinary Consistories, like the upcoming one in January 2026, gather Cardinals from around the world, allowing the Pope to consult with the entire College on matters concerning the Church.
