Nick Reiner, son of actor and director Rob Reiner, has been arrested. The 32-year-old was booked on murder charges Sunday and is scheduled to appear in court. This news comes as authorities investigate a mass shooting at Brown University and a terror attack at Bondi Beach.
According to NPR's Mandalit del Barco, Nick Reiner struggled with drug addiction, entering rehab multiple times starting at age 15. About a decade ago, he co-wrote "Being Charlie," a screenplay drawing from his experiences. Rob Reiner produced and directed the film. Cinematographer Barry Markowitz, who worked on "Being Charlie" and other Reiner films, told NPR that the Reiners were a close family. He had seen Nick and the family in Los Angeles just 10 days prior.
In reaction to the news, former President Trump posted on Truth Social, disparaging Rob Reiner and claiming that Reiner and his wife died due to the anger he caused others through "Trump Derangement Syndrome." Rob Reiner was a vocal critic of Trump and a prominent supporter of the Democratic Party.
In other news, police in Providence, Rhode Island, have released new images of a suspect in the Brown University mass shooting that killed two students, 18-year-old MukhammadAziz Umurzokov and 19-year-old Ella Cook, and injured nine others. Authorities are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the individual.
Ocean State Media reporter David Wright reports that authorities are sending mixed messages to the community. While officials warn that the suspect is still at large, armed, and dangerous, they are also trying to reassure residents that the streets are safe. Some parents have kept their children home from school as a precaution. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley has urged parents to continue sending their children to school, stating that the city has increased police presence.
Meanwhile, Australian authorities have linked the mass shooting at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach in Sydney to the Islamic State group. The suspects, a 50-year-old father and his 24-year-old son, killed 15 people and injured many others when they opened fire on Sunday night. Police shot and killed the father, while the son is hospitalized and in police custody.
Kristina Kukolja reports from a makeshift memorial near the site of the attack, where hundreds are paying their respects. Despite the heavy police presence, she describes a serene atmosphere punctuated by the sound of waves. New South Wales Police discovered improvised explosive devices and two homemade Islamic State flags in a car connected to one of the suspects. Counterterrorism investigators are investigating the suspects' trip to the Philippines last month and their potential destinations there.
