Newly revealed emails show a New York Times reporter offered Jeffrey Epstein control over his narrative as he faced accusations of sexually abusing minors.
Newly released emails reveal that a reporter for The New York Times offered Jeffrey Epstein the opportunity to frame his own narrative in an article, as Epstein faced allegations of sexually abusing minors. This occurred in the months leading up to his 2008 conviction.
Following a negative article about Epstein published in September 2007, Landon Thomas Jr., then a journalist at the Times, advised Epstein to proactively manage upcoming negative publicity. He suggested an interview that would allow Epstein to define the story “on your terms.”
Thomas wrote to Epstein in a September 20, 2007, email: “I Just read the Post. Now the floodgates will open — you can expect Vanity Fair and NYMag to pile on,” referencing Vanity Fair and New York Magazine.
He added, “My view is that the quicker you get out ahead of this and define the story and who you are on your terms in the NYT, the better it will be for you.”
Thomas, who left the Times in 2019, encouraged Epstein to act quickly to prevent a negative “popular tabloid perception” from solidifying. He also expressed sympathy regarding Epstein's legal challenges.
