Nathan Lyon now ranks sixth among all-time Test wicket-takers, surpassing fellow Australian legend Glenn McGrath during the Ashes Test.
Nathan Lyon has moved into sixth place on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers, overtaking Australian great Glenn McGrath. The off-spinner achieved the milestone during the third Ashes Test in Adelaide.
Coming into the match, Lyon, aged 38, needed two wickets to surpass McGrath's impressive total of 563. He quickly reached that mark by dismissing Ollie Pope, who was caught at mid-wicket off Lyon's third delivery. Shortly after, Lyon bowled Ben Duckett with a skillful ball, claiming his 564th Test wicket.
Lyon now stands as the second-highest Australian wicket-taker in Test cricket, trailing only the late Shane Warne, who recorded 708 wickets. Among active players, Lyon leads the rankings. He also holds the fourth spot among all spinners, following Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Shane Warne, and Anil Kumble (619).
Only two pace bowlers, both retired England players, remain ahead of Lyon: Sir James Anderson (704 wickets) and Stuart Broad (604 wickets).
McGrath commented on BBC Test Match Special, praising Lyon's achievement: "What a bowler. Nathan Lyon deserves to get that... He has been brilliant for Australia. He will go down as one of the greatest Australia spin bowlers behind Shane Warne. Lyon is the greatest off-spin bowler for Australia, he knows the craft so well. He has been part of that big four for Australia for such a long time."
Lyon's inclusion in this game followed his omission from the day-night Test in Brisbane. He expressed his disappointment at being left out, especially considering he had only bowled two overs in the series opener in Perth. Prior to the match, Lyon, who once worked as a groundsman at the Adelaide Oval, described the prospect of surpassing McGrath at the venue as "a little fairytale."
Before the game, the South Australia Cricket Association honored Lyon by unveiling a commemorative plaque on their 'Avenue of Honour'. Lyon has claimed 65 wickets at the Adelaide Oval, the most by any bowler at the ground.
