Najmul Hossain Shanto aims to rejoin Bangladesh's T20 team with strong BPL showings. He emphasizes impactful innings over personal milestones.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, currently the Test captain for Bangladesh, hopes to earn a place back in the national T20 squad through his performance in the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Shanto, who isn't a regular fixture in the T20 side, will be leading the Rajshahi Warriors in the tournament.
Shanto stressed the importance of delivering impactful performances in the T20 format, rather than focusing solely on individual scores.
"If I perform well in the BPL, why not be considered?" Shanto stated to reporters, regarding his chances of a T20 comeback. "The BPL is very important for me, and a strong showing here can send a clear message."
He added, "The selectors and coaching staff will make the decision. My job is to play good cricket. If I perform well and they believe I am capable, they will select me. In T20 cricket, the impact you have is more important than the runs you score. The key is how much influence you can have on the game. Every time I bat, my goal is to play an impactful innings, score runs, and contribute to the team."
Looking ahead, Shanto acknowledged the busy Test schedule facing Bangladesh in 2026, embracing the challenge. In 2025, under his leadership, Bangladesh played six Test matches, securing four wins, one draw, and one loss.
Bangladesh is scheduled to play at least 12 Test matches in 2026, including tours to Australia and South Africa. "I think this year has been good," Shanto commented while promoting the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh's (CWAB) All-Stars match on December 16, commemorating Victory Day.
"If you assess our performance, it hasn't been too bad overall. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. we could have performed better in the second Test match in Sri Lanka. I believe the team we have should have played better cricket. Looking ahead, there are many matches next year. We always hope to play many matches, especially Test matches. I don't want to overthink the hectic schedule you mentioned," he said.
"We want more Test matches, and more matches in every format. Having the opportunity to play is a positive thing. Planning has gradually started, and I believe we will move forward with a much clearer plan after the BPL concludes," Shanto concluded.
