Chennai Super Kings' recent acquisitions of Sanju Samson and Kartik Sharma, along with Dhoni's age, suggest a strategic shift and potential end to his IPL career.
Speculation is mounting about MS Dhoni's future in the IPL as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) makes strategic moves signaling a transition. The franchise's recent activity in the market, particularly the acquisition of younger wicketkeeper-batsmen, suggests a succession plan may be in motion.
During the IPL 2026 mini-auction, CSK secured the services of 19-year-old Kartik Sharma for INR 14.20 crore. This is notable as it represents the joint-highest amount ever paid for an uncapped Indian player in IPL history. Prior to this, Rajasthan Royals received Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran from CSK in exchange for Sanju Samson, who is valued at INR 18 crore.
With the retention of Urvil Patel, CSK now boasts four wicketkeeper-batsmen. This is a significant departure for a team that has relied almost exclusively on Dhoni's presence behind the stumps since 2008.
Head coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged a change in the team's approach during the auction. He stated that the team is preparing for the inevitable moment when Dhoni steps away. Fleming specifically highlighted Sanju Samson as an international-caliber player capable of filling that void. He admitted that clinging to past strategies based on previous success is not viable, indicating the need for a strategic shift. Notably, CSK allocated 60% of their INR 43.40 crore budget to just two uncapped players, signaling a dramatic change from the team's earlier reliance on experienced players, sometimes referred to as “Dad’s Army.”
Dhoni himself has alluded to the twilight of his career. While the 44-year-old has not officially announced his retirement, his statements suggest he is nearing the end. During the last IPL season, Dhoni acknowledged that he was in the final phase of his career. Following CSK's last match in May 2025, where they finished at the bottom of the league for the first time, he stated he was neither confirming nor denying a return. He was retained by CSK for INR 4 crores.
Robin Uthappa, a former teammate of Dhoni's at CSK, suggested during the auction broadcast that this season is likely to be Dhoni's last. Uthappa's comments further fuel speculation about Dhoni's future. CSK's current wicketkeeper lineup includes Samson, Sharma, and Patel, representing different stages of their careers. This strategic move appears to be long-term planning for the post-Dhoni era, ensuring the franchise's continued success.
The franchise is proactively building for the future, even as Dhoni remains an iconic figure. Despite his age, persistent knee issues, and the team's focus on younger talent, it remains uncertain if IPL 2026 will indeed be his last. While the writing may be on the wall, Dhoni's final decision remains unknown.
