Mercedes-Benz is developing a smaller, more accessible G-Wagon. Get the inside scoop on its design, features, powertrain, expected price, and launch timeline.

For those who dream of owning a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, the news of a more compact version could be very exciting. Given that the flagship G-Wagon carries a price tag of roughly 3 crore rupees, a smaller G-Class opens the door to ownership for a wider audience. Here’s what we currently know about this upcoming 'Baby G-Wagon'.

**Exterior Design**

While the official name remains under wraps, the smaller G-Wagon prototype has been observed in Germany, sporting camouflage. Despite the disguise, its lineage is unmistakable, echoing the iconic boxy silhouette, circular LED headlights, rectangular windows, and the signature rear-mounted spare tire. The primary distinctions lie in its reduced dimensions – a shorter wheelbase, length, height, and width, along with a decreased ground clearance. The boxy aesthetic is projected to be a major draw for potential buyers.

Rather than utilizing the full-size G-Wagon platform, it's anticipated that this model will be built upon the MMA platform, shared with the GLA and CLA. This platform is known for its robustness.

**Interior Features**

Inside, expect a luxurious experience comparable to the GLC, but within the Baby G-Wagon's unique design. Anticipate features such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), 360-degree parking assist, ventilated seats, leather upholstery, a sunroof, and a dual-screen setup. As a Mercedes-Benz product, it will offer a premium interior with sufficient space for five occupants. The dashboard design is predicted to mirror other Mercedes SUVs, albeit with a more upright orientation reminiscent of the larger G-Class, creating an elevated and enjoyable driving environment.

**Engine and Powertrain**

Reflecting Mercedes-Benz's shift towards electrification, the G-Wagon is already available as an all-electric model. The Baby G-Wagon is slated to have an EV version. Internal combustion engine (ICE) enthusiasts shouldn't anticipate the bi-turbo V8 found in the top-tier G-Wagon. More likely options include the 2.0L 4-cylinder petrol and 2.0L 4-cylinder diesel engines currently used in the GLC. It is plausible that power figures may see a slight increase for the Baby G-Wagon. A 9-speed automatic transmission and the 4-matic all-wheel-drive system are anticipated as standard features.

Mercedes-Benz's strategy involves leveraging the prestige of the G-Class brand to boost sales volumes. Recognizing the substantial customer interest, they aim to capitalize on the desire for consumers to own a vehicle associated with the iconic G-Wagon.

**Competitive Landscape**

The Baby G-Wagon is positioned to contend with established luxury SUVs like the BMW X3, Mercedes GLC, Audi Q5, Range Rover Velar, Jaguar F-Pace, and Porsche Macan. Mercedes-Benz intends to use its distinctive styling and brand recognition to distinguish the Baby G-Wagon as a more rugged and capable contender in this segment.

**Pricing and Availability**

Despite being the more accessible G-Wagon, it's still expected to command a premium price. The entry-level price is projected to be around 1.3 crore rupees (on-road, Mumbai), with higher-end models reaching 1.5 crore rupees. While still expensive, this is less than half the cost of the flagship G-Wagon. Where vehicles like the Jimny, Thar, and Bolero have been informally dubbed “budget” G-Classes, Mercedes is officially entering the arena. Production is currently slated to commence in 2027, potentially leading to an Indian launch in mid-to-late 2028. This provides ample time to save for those aspiring to own a G-Class but whose budgets align more closely with vehicles like the X3.
