Prosecutors in Berlin have charged Matthias Moosdorf, a member of the AfD party, with performing a Nazi salute at the Reichstag building in June 2023.
A member of Germany's far-right AfD party has been charged with making a Nazi salute at the Reichstag, according to Berlin prosecutors.
The incident allegedly occurred in June 2023 when Matthias Moosdorf, 60, reportedly greeted a colleague with a heel click and Hitler salute at the Reichstag's east entrance, prosecutors stated on Monday. Moosdorf represents Zwickau, Saxony, in parliament, according to the newspaper Bild.
German law prohibits such gestures, with penalties of up to three years in prison.
The prosecutors' statement also noted that the accused was aware the gesture was visible to others entering the building.
Moosdorf's parliamentary immunity was revoked in October following the allegations. He denied making the salute in a post on X on Monday.
Prior to May, Moosdorf, who has been an AfD member since 2016, served as a foreign policy spokesperson for the party. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. he was removed from the role due to internal disagreements over his pro-Russia stance. It was also revealed in October 2024 that Moosdorf, a trained cellist, holds an honorary professorship at a Moscow music academy.
