Paul Doyle, 53, was sentenced to 21 years, 6 months for driving his car into a Liverpool F.C. victory parade, injuring over 130 people in May.
Paul Doyle, the 53-year-old man who drove his car into a crowd celebrating Liverpool F.C.’s Premier League win in May, has been sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison. The incident, which injured more than 130 people, initially sparked fears of a terrorist attack.
Prosecutors revealed that the event in Liverpool, England, stemmed from road rage. Judge Andrew Menary stated that Doyle's actions began with “impatience and arrogance” as he encountered traffic congestion and pedestrians after the parade. This escalated into what the judge described as “an inexplicable and undiluted fury,” leading to the devastating act.
While all the victims survived, Judge Menary noted that many suffered lasting physical disabilities and psychological trauma. One victim, a 12-year-old boy whose name was withheld by the court, described how May 26 went from being “the best day ever” to “the worst day of my life” after being struck by Doyle's car.
Approximately one million Liverpool F.C. fans had gathered in the city to celebrate their team's championship. The atmosphere was joyous as an open-top bus carrying the players made its way through the streets. As the festivities concluded, the crowd began to disperse, unaware of the impending danger.
