A man who disarmed an alleged gunman during the Bondi Beach attack in Australia is being called a hero. The attack has been declared a terrorist act.
Following Sunday's deadly attack at Bondi Beach in Australia, a man who disarmed an alleged gunman is being praised as a hero. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns called him a "genuine hero" for his actions during the incident.
Authorities have classified the shooting as a terrorist act, stating that the attack appeared to specifically target Jewish people. A Hanukkah celebration was taking place at Bondi Beach when the violence occurred. The attack resulted in at least 11 fatalities.
Video footage verified by NBC News shows what appears to be multiple shooters and the moment when a man is disarmed. The video shows a man in a white T-shirt taking cover behind a parked car before confronting one of the alleged shooters from behind. He manages to wrestle the weapon away from the shooter, who then retreats. The man then places the weapon near a palm tree.
The footage also seems to capture a subsequent shootout, with a second gunman firing towards people attempting to intervene from a bridge.
Premier Minns emphasized the bravery of the man who disarmed the alleged shooter. "That man is a genuine hero, and I’ve got no doubt there are many, many people alive tonight as a result of his bravery,” he said.
Police in New South Wales reported that one man believed to be among the attackers was killed. A second alleged shooter is in critical condition. Neither individual has been identified publicly.
Over 1,000 people were gathered at Bondi Beach on Sunday evening for the Hanukkah event.
