India may order more Rafale fighter jets, including advanced F5 variants, to boost its air power. Local production hinges on securing a full order.
Recent reports suggest India is considering acquiring 90 Rafale F4 multirole fighter aircraft, with a potential option for 24 advanced Rafale F5 variants for the Indian Air Force (IAF). These reports stem from a possible leak from France’s Ministry of the Armed Forces.
The IAF has also reportedly proposed purchasing 114 Rafales to accelerate the induction of Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA). The Rafale has been extensively tested, including in recent exercises like “Op Sindoor.”
As of late 2025, the IAF has only 29 fighter aircraft squadrons operational, compared to its authorized strength of 42.5. This shortfall is worsened by delays in domestic aircraft development programs, underscoring the IAF's need for additional fighter aircraft.
This acquisition push occurs as the regional balance of power shifts. The US recently approved a $686 million upgrade for Pakistan's F-16 fighter jets, extending their operational life to 2040. Pakistan also operates Chinese J-10C fighters equipped with PL-15 long-range missiles and aims to acquire the Chinese J-35 fifth-generation aircraft. China itself has nearly 400 J-20 fifth-generation fighters. These developments highlight the increasing modernization efforts of China and Pakistan's air forces.
Choosing Rafale would allow the IAF to maintain fleet continuity and avoid the complexities of introducing another aircraft type. Officials suggest that manufacturing Rafales in India will only be viable if a full order of 140 jets is placed. A government-to-government (G2G) deal could be a likely avenue for such a procurement.
