Maharashtra and Brookfield will build Asia’s largest 2-million sq ft GCC with a $1-billion investment, creating 45,000 jobs as the state pushes to become India’s GCC capital.
The Maharashtra government, in collaboration with Brookfield Corporation, will build Asia’s biggest Global Capacity Centre (GCC) worth an investment of over $1 billion, said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Jio World Centre on Friday. The Memorandum of Understanding for the same will be signed soon.
In line with the state government’s ambition to make Maharashtra the “GCC-capital,” Fadnavis said the 2 million square feet GCC will employ 15,000 people directly and 30,000 people indirectly.
$1-billion bet
“We have just discussed an important project to set up the biggest GCC in Asia or maybe the world in collaboration with Brookfield. The investment will be more than $1 billion. The GCC will be nearly 2 million square feet, employing 45,000 people in total. We want to make Maharashtra a GCC-capital. We will soon sign an MoU,” said Fadnavis.
Expanding the hub
Aside from Brookfield, the government also spoke with logistics company FeDex to set up their GCCs in the Mumbai and Navi Mumbai areas. Earlier, the Maharashtra government had announced plans to set up 400 GCCs across the state over the next five years, with Pune identified as a key growth hub. Regarding GCC regulations, Fadnavis said authorities will first focus on tier-1 cities such as Mumbai and Pune before moving on to tier-2 cities.
GCC boom ahead
WeWork workspace solutions company had earlier told businessline it expects India’s GCC workforce to rise sharply to nearly 10-20 million over time. Global companies are rapidly shifting from outsourcing to insourcing, as operating GCCs in India costs less than routing them through IT service providers.
