A Hong Kong court will deliver its verdict in the trial of Jimmy Lai, charged under national security law, a key test of the city's freedoms.
HONG KONG – The verdict in the trial of Jimmy Lai, the former founder of a pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong, is expected Monday. Lai faces charges of conspiring to commit sedition and colluding with foreign forces. The case is viewed as a significant indicator of the changes in Hong Kong since Beijing initiated a widespread crackdown on dissent five years ago.
The 78-year-old Lai was arrested in 2020 under the national security law imposed by China. This law was enacted to suppress the large anti-government protests that occurred in Hong Kong in 2019.
Lai's 156-day trial is being closely monitored by international governments and political observers. It is seen as a test of judicial independence and media freedom in the former British colony. Hong Kong was promised the maintenance of its Western-style civil liberties for 50 years following its return to Chinese rule in 1997.
**Key Points of the Landmark Trial:**
Hong Kong was once renowned for its vibrant press and protest culture. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. after months of anti-government demonstrations, Beijing initiated a sweeping crackdown that has largely suppressed open dissent in the city.
Lai was among the first prominent figures to be charged under the National Security Law. The law has also been used to prosecute other leading activists and opposition politicians. Beijing has asserted that the law is essential for maintaining stability in Hong Kong.
Since the implementation of the law, numerous civil society groups have closed, and tens of thousands of young professionals and middle-class families have emigrated.
