An Israeli airstrike in Gaza City killed a senior Hamas commander, according to the Israeli military. Casualties included four deaths and multiple injuries.
The Israeli military announced it killed a high-ranking Hamas commander in Gaza on Saturday, following a targeted strike on a vehicle in Gaza City.
According to an Israeli military statement, the operation successfully "struck a key Hamas terrorist." Mahmoud Basal, a spokesman for the Hamas-run Civil Defence, reported to the BBC that the strike resulted in four fatalities and injured several passers-by.
Local sources suggest the target may have been Raed Saad, a senior commander within Hamas's armed wing, the Qassam Brigades. Saad is believed to be a member of Hamas's recently formed five-member military council, created after the October ceasefire.
Saad is considered a prominent Qassam commander and led multiple brigades during Hamas's October 7 attacks on Israeli communities east of Gaza City. Israel has made numerous attempts to eliminate him, including a March 2024 operation in Gaza City where Israeli forces sought to apprehend or kill him. Sources indicated that Saad narrowly escaped the targeted complex just before the raid.
For over two decades, Israel has considered Saad a high-priority target. Saturday's strike occurred on the Palestinian side of the Yellow Line, which divides Gaza. The BBC is currently unable to independently verify details from within Gaza due to Israeli restrictions on reporting in the area.
