Shubman Gill's absence from the India vs. South Africa T20I match raises questions about injury and performance. Fans speculate on the real reason.
Shubman Gill's absence from the fourth T20I against South Africa in Lucknow has fueled speculation among fans, with some suggesting his recent struggles with form may be a contributing factor alongside his reported foot injury. The official explanation cites an injury, but some observers believe this provides a convenient cover for his poor performances, especially given the increasing calls for changes in India's batting lineup.
Gill had rejoined the T20I squad after recovering from a neck problem that sidelined him during the ODI series against South Africa. The five-match T20I series was viewed as an opportunity for him to regain his form, especially after a disappointing Asia Cup. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. his return to the team did not go as planned. In the first two matches, he recorded low scores, although he did show some promise in the third T20I held in Dharamshala.
Across the three innings, Gill only managed to score 32 runs. His scores of 4 and 0 in Cuttack and Mullanpur put him under considerable pressure, and his 28 in Dharamshala only partially alleviated concerns. His series average is 10.66, and his strike rate is 103.22, highlighting his struggles in a format that demands aggressive batting from the start.
Prior to the Lucknow T20I, it was anticipated that a change in the batting order was likely, with Sanju Samson potentially replacing Gill as an opener. That said, the reality is a bit more complicated. the match at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium was abandoned due to poor visibility caused by smog, making the discussion moot. Nevertheless, Gill's injury ensured he remained out of the spotlight, at least for the time being.
Looking at his overall T20I performance in 2025, Gill has had a relatively unremarkable year. In 15 matches, he has scored 291 runs, averaging 24.25 with a strike rate of 137.26. While these numbers are not necessarily alarming on their own, they fall short of the high expectations placed on him as the team's vice-captain and a key top-order batsman.
Adding to India's concerns are other injuries within the squad, with Axar Patel already ruled out for the remainder of the series. Gill's absence could create an opportunity for Samson, whose last T20I appearance was during the tour of Australia. Samson had a productive 2024 as an opener, scoring 512 runs in 14 matches at an average of 39.38 and a strike rate of 182.20. His potential inclusion adds an interesting element as India reconsiders its options.
