India has secured the 3rd position in Stanford University's AI Vibrancy Index, reflecting its growing strength in artificial intelligence development.

India has emerged as a leading force in the global AI landscape, securing the third position in the 'AI Vibrancy' index, according to a Stanford University study. This ranking highlights India's progress in preparing for an AI-driven future across various sectors. The United States and China currently hold the top two positions.

The 2025 edition of Stanford's 'Global AI Vibrancy Tool' assessed 36 countries using data up to 2024. The assessment framework considered seven key pillars: research and development, responsible AI practices, economic impact, talent pool, policy and governance, public opinion, and infrastructure. Data coverage extends to 67 countries for specific indicators within the 'AI Metrics Over Time' category.

India's overall score in the 2024 Global Vibrancy Index is 21.59, placing it ahead of South Korea (17.24) and the United Kingdom (16.64). The Stanford report notes India's significant jump from seventh place in 2023 to third, while the UK moved from sixth to fifth. The report attributes these advancements to renewed initiatives aimed at strengthening their positions within the global AI ecosystem. India also performed well in innovation and economic competitiveness.

The United States maintains a significant lead in the 2024 Global Vibrancy Index, with a total weighted score of 78.6. Many of the world's leading AI models originate from the US. The US excels in nearly all pillars of the index, except for talent and public opinion. Its strengths are particularly evident in research and development, economic contributions, and infrastructure. The report highlights that many prominent AI models released in 2024, including Gemini 2.0 Pro, o1, and Llama 3.1, were developed by companies based in the United States.
