A bystander is being hailed as a hero after tackling a gunman during a Hanukkah shooting in Sydney, Australia. The man disarmed the shooter before being wounded.


A man is being lauded as a hero after tackling and disarming a gunman during a Hanukkah shooting in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday. Harrowing footage shows the bystander intervening to stop the attack.

The video shows the man sneaking up on one of the shooters as the assailant was firing off-screen. The bystander then tackled the shooter and managed to wrestle the weapon away. He then pointed the gun at the shooter but did not fire.

Australian media have identified the hero as Ahmed al-Ahmad, 43. According to Ahmed's cousin, Mustafa al-Ahmad, Ahmed was shot in the arm and shoulder by a second gunman after tackling the first. Mustafa told News 7 in Australia, "He's a hero. One hundred percent a hero. Once we saw on social media, he's one hundred percent a hero."

Ahmed is currently undergoing surgery, but Australian media reports he is expected to make a full recovery.

Following the release of the footage, praise and gratitude for Ahmed's bravery have flooded social media.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initially misidentified Ahmed as Jewish but later acknowledged his bravery in a statement after al-Ahmad's identity was confirmed. He said, "We saw an action of a brave man – turns out a Mus…"
