The courtroom drama *Haq*, featuring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, is heading to streaming platforms after its theatrical debut in November. The film, inspired by the well-known Shah Bano case, delves into themes of women’s rights, personal law, and the pursuit of justice, centering on a Muslim woman’s fight in court for rightful maintenance.
*Haq*, starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, is set for digital release following its theatrical run, where it sparked conversations about women’s rights, the law, and personal freedom. For those who missed its initial release or wish to watch it again, details about its streaming premiere have been announced.
According to a Times Now report, *Haq* is slated to premiere on Netflix on January 2, 2026. While official confirmation from the filmmakers is still pending, the release date is reportedly confirmed. The film, which was released in theaters on November 7, will be available for streaming almost two months later. Netflix is expected to offer the legal drama to its viewers both in India and internationally.
*Haq* draws inspiration from the Shah Bano case, also known as Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum, a landmark legal battle in Indian history. The film, set against the social and legal backdrop of the late 1970s and early 1980s, explores issues of maintenance, personal law, and women’s rights.
Yami Gautam plays Shazia Bano, a Muslim woman who challenges injustice after being abandoned. She seeks maintenance for herself and her children in court under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Emraan Hashmi portrays Advocate Mohammad Abbas Khan, whose actions and legal decisions are central to the case. The film addresses themes of faith, identity, the Uniform Civil Code under Article 44, and the relationship between personal beliefs and constitutional law.
In an interview with Zoom, advocates Shally Bhasin and Shweta Shroff Chopra from Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, discussed *Haq*'s impact. Shally Bhasin explained that the film enhances public understanding of women's rights, particularly within a specific community, while also highlighting the broader challenges women encounter. She suggested that this type of storytelling can raise awareness and promote empowerment.
Shweta Shroff Chopra noted that while films often provide an escape, movies like *Haq* bring viewers back to real-world issues. She emphasized the importance of socially relevant films in prompting audiences to reflect on their society and its realities, and she commended filmmakers for addressing such difficult topics.
The cast of *Haq* includes Yami Gautam, Emraan Hashmi, Vartika Singh, Sheeba Chaddha, and Danish Husain. This film marks the first on-screen collaboration between Yami and Emraan, both of whom have been praised for their performances.
At the box office, *Haq* reportedly earned ₹19.37 crore in India, with a total worldwide gross of ₹28.44 crore. With its upcoming OTT release, the film is anticipated to reach a broader audience when it begins streaming on Netflix in January 2026.
