At least 11 people were killed and 29 wounded in a terrorist attack at a Jewish event on Sydney's Bondi Beach. Gunmen opened fire before police intervened.

Sydney, Australia – A mass shooting at a Jewish event on Bondi Beach Sunday left at least 11 people dead and 29 wounded, according to Australian authorities, who have declared the incident a terrorist attack.

Police confirmed that two gunmen were involved. One was killed by police at the scene, while the other was taken into custody and is in critical condition. A large-scale emergency response was initiated, with numerous ambulances transporting the injured to hospitals.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon stated that two police officers were among the 29 confirmed people wounded.

Premier Chris Minns of New South Wales, the state where Sydney is located, asserted that the attack deliberately targeted Sydney's Jewish community. Commissioner Lanyon explained that the massacre was classified as a terrorist attack due to the specific target and the weapons employed.

The event, known as "Chanukah by the Sea," had drawn hundreds of people to Bondi Beach to celebrate the beginning of the Hanukkah festival.

Eyewitness video footage broadcast on Australian television appeared to show a member of the public tackling and disarming one of the gunmen, even turning the weapon on the attacker.

Lachlan Moran, 32, from Melbourne, recounted to The Associated Press that he was waiting for his family nearby when the shooting began. He immediately dropped what he was holding and fled.

"You heard a few pops, and I freaked out and ran away...I started sprinting. I just had that intuition. I sprinted as quickly as I could," Moran said, adding that he heard intermittent gunfire during his escape.
