A Sunday attack on a Jewish gathering at Bondi Beach in Australia has left at least 11 people dead. The incident occurred on the first day of Hanukkah, according to Australian government officials and police reports.
The shooting involved two gunmen. One is confirmed dead, while the other is hospitalized in serious condition and is currently in police custody. Authorities also reported that 29 people were hospitalized with injuries, including two police officers and a child.
The event, known as "Hanukkah by the Sea," was held to celebrate the beginning of the Jewish holiday, which started at sundown on Sunday and continues until Monday, December 22. New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon stated at a news conference that over 1,000 people were present on the beach when the shooting began. He described the attack as a "terrorist incident," noting the perpetrators used "long arms," which refers to rifles or shotguns.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese both described the attack as targeted. Minns stated the attack "was designed to target Sydney's Jewish community," and the Prime Minister called it "a targeted attack on Jewish Australians."
