The third season of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League (TechM GCL) is in full swing, running from December 14th to 23rd. This year's tournament continues the innovative franchise-based structure, uniting some of the world's finest chess players in gender-mixed teams, all competing for a substantial $1 million prize pool.
A key characteristic of the league is its team composition. Each squad consists of six players who remain in a fixed order throughout the competition. The highest-rated player, known as the Icon, always occupies the first board. Boards two and three are reserved for male players, boards four and five for female players, and board six is for a junior player born in 2003 or later. This arrangement blends experienced chess masters with emerging young talents within a single competitive environment.
The competition unfolds in two stages: a Preliminary Stage followed by a Final. Advancement and the ultimate championship title are determined by a combination of individual game scores and overall match outcomes.
All matches are played under a time control of 20 minutes for the entire game, with a 2-second increment added starting from move 41.
