Kapil Dev suggests Gautam Gambhir's strength lies in player management, not technical coaching, amidst scrutiny after India's Test series loss.
Kapil Dev, who captained India to its first World Cup victory, has shared his views on the ongoing discussion about Gautam Gambhir's approach to the game. According to Kapil, the head coach's role in modern cricket is less about providing hands-on technical instruction and more about effectively managing players.
Gambhir has been under increasing scrutiny following India's 0-2 Test series defeat to South Africa, with some questioning his frequent player rotations and use of part-time players. Speaking at the Indian Chamber of Commerce’s ICC Centenary Session on Thursday, Kapil Dev suggested that the very definition of a "coach" is often misunderstood in contemporary cricket.
"The term 'coach' is used too freely these days. Gautam Gambhir's real strength isn't coaching; he's better suited to managing the team," Kapil stated. He clarified his perspective by saying, "When I think of a coach, I think of those who taught me in school and college. They were my coaches."
Kapil explained that international-level players typically don't require technical guidance from a head coach. He questioned, "How can you coach someone who is already a skilled leg-spinner or wicketkeeper? How can Gautam instruct a leg-spinner or a wicketkeeper?" He emphasized that managing personalities and fostering a positive team environment are the most critical responsibilities.
"Management is more crucial. A manager needs to encourage players and instill confidence in their abilities. Young players look up to you," he added. Kapil believes that the primary role of a coach or captain is to offer support and reassurance.
"The key is to give the team confidence and consistently tell them, 'you can perform even better.' That's my philosophy," he explained. Reflecting on his own leadership, Kapil mentioned his deliberate effort to support players struggling with their performance. "If a player scores a century, I don't feel the need to celebrate with them," he said. "I prefer to spend time with those who are underperforming."
Kapil stressed that building confidence in struggling players is essential for team success. "You must instill belief in them. As a captain, your responsibility extends beyond your own performance; it's about maintaining team unity," he concluded.
