Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, well into their late thirties, continue to show remarkable commitment and ability to perform at the highest level. Both are in the last stretch of their international careers, having already bid goodbye to Tests and T20Is. They both have shown form and motivation to continue playing one-day cricket with the 2027 ODI World Cup being the ultimate goal. Despite that, there have been unending speculations over the Indian team management’s desire to keep the veteran duo in their long-term plans, with the coaches refusing to provide clarity in the name of remaining focused on the present.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak seem to be on the same page. However, Rohit and Kohli, through their recent performances in Australia and India, have shown they can continue to deliver consistently against quality teams.
Rohit topped the scoring charts in the three-match bilateral ODI series in Australia, while Kohli took the centre stage against South Africa.
Gambhir, who has been vocal against singling out individuals for a team’s success, though has surprised former India batter Robin Uthappa, who feels that the head coach should have acknowledged Rohit and Kohli for proving their doubters wrong.
“What I found surprising is the post-match of that series, in the press conference, I didn’t see Gautam giving credit to either Rohit or Virat," Uthappa said on his YouTube channel.
“Here are a couple of guys who’ve batted out of their skins and shown us how good they are and how good they can be. They reduced all kinds of doubts and shut down any naysayers about what they actually can do and will do for India when they are in the right kind of form. That felt strange," he added.
Rohit and Kohli will again don the India jersey next year in January for a three-match bilateral ODI series against New Zealand.
