A new report suggests Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 could surpass Apple's first foldable iPhone in display size and camera quality when both launch in 2026.
Apple is expected to enter the foldable phone market around 2026, a full seven years after Samsung pioneered the category in 2019. New information suggests Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 could offer at least two key advantages over Apple's initial foldable iPhone offering.
According to Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, the foldable iPhone is rumored to feature a 5.25-inch cover display and a 7.58-inch inner, foldable display. The phone will supposedly have a dual-camera system on the rear. The front will feature a punch-hole cutout for a camera on the cover display and an under-display camera beneath the inner screen.
If these specifications prove accurate, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is poised to have larger displays. The current Galaxy Z Fold 7 boasts a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch foldable display, and it's likely the Z Fold 8 will maintain or improve upon these dimensions. Aspect ratios, however, could differ between the two devices.
Beyond display size, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could also have a superior camera system. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 includes a triple-camera array on the rear: a 200MP primary camera with OIS, a 12MP ultrawide camera with autofocus, and a 10MP telephoto lens offering 3x optical zoom. In contrast, the foldable iPhone is rumored to have a dual-camera setup with a 48MP primary rear camera with OIS and an ultrawide lens (likely 12MP), but may lack a dedicated telephoto camera.
Furthermore, under-display cameras typically produce lower image quality compared to standard cameras in punch-hole cutouts. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 incorporates two 10MP front-facing cameras, one on each display. It is reasonable to expect its successor to have similar or better front-facing cameras, potentially outperforming the foldable iPhone's front camera capabilities.
Both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the foldable iPhone are anticipated to launch in the latter half of 2026. While the Samsung device may offer superior hardware in terms of display size and camera technology, whether this translates to a noticeably better user experience remains to be seen.
