Discover the reasons behind Kobbie Mainoo's absence from Manchester United's squad against Aston Villa, amid swirling speculation about a potential January transfer. Injury update and more.

Kobbie Mainoo's absence from the Manchester United squad facing Aston Villa stemmed from a minor injury sustained during a Saturday training session. Prior to the match, attention had focused on the 20-year-old midfielder after his brother's controversial actions at the Bournemouth game.

During the previous Monday's 4-4 draw against Bournemouth, Mainoo's brother wore a T-shirt bearing the message 'Free Kobbie Mainoo' at Old Trafford. This prompted criticism from United legend Roy Keane, who addressed the matter on the 'Stick to Football' podcast. Keane stated that such behavior was unhelpful, suggesting that Mainoo should distance himself from such antics. He questioned whether Mainoo had approved his brother's actions, emphasizing the importance of focusing on professional development. Keane highlighted that young players should concentrate on learning and proving themselves, even when facing challenges in securing first-team opportunities. He acknowledged the potential benefits of loan moves but stressed the importance of fighting for a place at Manchester United.

Mainoo had previously expressed a desire to leave United on loan in the summer, seeking more consistent playing time under manager Amorim. Despite remaining with the club, his appearances have been limited to 302 minutes across all competitions this season, fueling renewed speculation about a possible departure in the upcoming January transfer window.

While Amorim has faced questions about Mainoo's role and has sometimes appeared critical, he defended the player regarding his brother's actions. In a press conference on Friday, Amorim clarified that the T-shirt incident would not influence team selection. He affirmed that Mainoo would play if deemed suitable, emphasizing that family matters would not affect his decisions. Amorim stated that he was accustomed to such situations and that Mainoo's performance was the priority, adding that his door was always open for discussion and that everything was normal ahead of the Villa match.
