Hasleen Kaur discusses Hollywood's strict set rules on meal penalties and overtime in an exclusive interview, backing Deepika Padukone's 8-hour shift demand.
Hasleen Kaur is having a banner year in 2025. Her recent international film, "Ruthless Bastards," has garnered positive attention since its digital release in several countries. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the actress shared insights about the film, the differences between Indian and Hollywood work cultures, and more.
**Inside "Ruthless Bastards"**
Kaur was eager to discuss "Ruthless Bastards," which features veteran Hollywood actors Casper Van Dien (of "Starship Troopers" fame) and Sean Patrick Flanery. She recounted her excitement at the opportunity to perform an action scene with Van Dien, whose work she and her brother admired growing up. She emphasized how the presence of these actors enhanced the film.
"Ruthless Bastards" delves into the criminal underworld of North America, showcasing Chinese, Russian, and the increasingly prominent Indian gangs. Kaur plays Ishanna Sidhu, a member of the Indian gang. The film is directed by Bruce Fontaine, known for his work with Jackie Chan. His direction has been widely praised.
To the surprise of the filmmakers, "Ruthless Bastards" was picked up by Apple TV and Prime Video. The positive reception has led to discussions about a potential sequel, possibly titled "Ruthless Vixens," focusing on female assassins in a John Wick-style action format, according to Kaur. Fontaine has even created a draft poster for the concept.
Currently, the team is working to secure distribution in India. The initial strategy was to release the film in the US and Europe first, gather feedback, and then leverage that momentum for releases in India, China, and other markets.
**Hollywood vs. Bollywood: A Tale of Two Work Cultures**
Kaur highlighted the significant differences in film production between Hollywood and India, particularly regarding punctuality. She recalled being a few minutes late one day and being promptly reminded by producer Alex Bogomolov that even minor delays can disrupt the meticulously planned schedule. In Hollywood, every hour is broken down into six-minute slots, with specific time allocations for costume fittings, hair, and makeup. These are expected to take 12-18 minutes combined. Production meticulously calculates travel time from the actor's trailer to the set.
She also noted the strict enforcement of eight-hour shifts. While acknowledging that unforeseen circumstances can extend shooting hours, she emphasized that overtime is compensated at 1.5 times the standard rate. Furthermore, if an actor misses their designated lunch break (typically 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm) due to shooting, they receive a meal penalty. These union rules ensure accountability from producers to actors and minimize delays.
Kaur cited her scene with Casper Van Dien as an example, noting that he was prepared and on set before her, having already rehearsed. With the DOP and lighting set, the actor was ready to begin.
**Supporting Deepika Padukone's Call for 8-Hour Shifts**
The conversation shifted to Deepika Padukone's advocacy for eight-hour shifts in the Indian film industry. Kaur expressed her support, emphasizing the need to respect everyone's time. While acknowledging the demanding nature of large-scale film projects, she believes that eliminating time-wasting practices could allow for earlier wrap times, rather than the typical 12-14 hour workdays.
She suggested that implementing a system where technicians are paid 1.5 times their rate for shifts exceeding 12 hours should apply to everyone on set. This increased financial accountability would encourage producers to adhere to stricter timelines. Kaur also stressed the importance of work-life balance, allowing individuals to rest and return to work refreshed.
**Creative Cultr: A Parallel Passion**
Kaur also discussed her marketing agency, Creative Cultr, established in November 2017. She entered the field of digital marketing and advertising in 2012, a year after winning Miss India. Creative Cultr specializes in ad campaigns, marketing strategies, brand identities, website creation, social media management, and influencer outreach programs.
Her clients include CNN IBN, Network18, and Impresario Entertainment and Hospitality (the company behind Social restaurants). Creative Cultr handled the launch of Odeon Social in New Delhi and assists FMCG companies with brand identity development, campaign execution, and ad analytics.
Kaur, who studied advertising and public relations, emphasized that her company was not created to fill downtime as an actor. She is equally passionate about both acting and marketing and believes it is possible to successfully manage two separate businesses. Acting, she says, provided her with the freedom to launch her own company.
