At least 37 people have died in Safi, Morocco, due to flash floods after torrential rains. Rescue operations are underway in the port city.
Tragedy struck the Moroccan port city of Safi as flash floods claimed the lives of at least 37 people, according to reports from state-owned television. The devastating event followed a period of torrential rainfall.
The intense downpour resulted in scenes of cars and debris being swept through the city's streets. Local authorities have reported that dozens of individuals are currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the flooding. In the old city center alone, at least 70 homes have been flooded.
Road access to and from Safi has been disrupted due to damage and debris, according to local sources. Residents described the event as a "dark day," with one individual telling AFP news agency of the urgent need for government assistance to pump out the floodwaters.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, according to Moroccan authorities. Experts suggest that the climate crisis has contributed to the extreme weather patterns observed in Morocco. The North African nation has been grappling with drought conditions for the past seven years, leading to depleted reservoirs. Last year marked the hottest year on record.
Morocco's weather service has issued warnings for continued rainfall on Tuesday, along with snowfall expected across the Atlas Mountains.
