Director Vikram Bhatt and his wife, Shwetambari Bhatt, were jailed in Udaipur after their bail plea was denied in connection to a ₹30 crore fraud case.
Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife, Shwetambari Bhatt, have been placed in judicial custody regarding allegations of a ₹30 crore fraud. On Tuesday, a court in Udaipur denied their request for interim bail, which they sought on medical grounds. Subsequently, both were taken to Udaipur Central Jail.
The couple's lawyer, Manzoor Hussain, had argued for interim bail, stating that it would allow them to seek necessary medical treatment. Hussain told ANI that granting the bail before the court session concluded would permit their temporary release for medical reasons. The court, however, rejected this plea.
The Rajasthan Police arrested the Bhatts in Mumbai on December 7, and they have been in police custody since early December. Following their arrest, the couple was held in police remand for seven days, starting December 9. After this period, they were presented before the court in Udaipur.
The charges against the Bhatts and seven others stem from a complaint filed by Dr. Ajay Murdia, the founder of Indira IVF. Murdia alleges that they defrauded him of approximately ₹30 crore under the guise of producing several films, including a biopic. The complaint claims that the funds were solicited with promises of substantial returns and prominent projects, but the alleged agreements and production plans never materialized.
Vikram Bhatt has denied any wrongdoing, describing the FIR as "misleading." He maintains that he will cooperate fully with the investigation. Bhatt has stated that any unfulfilled aspects of the film projects resulted from misunderstandings or were stopped by the complainant, and he claims to possess documentation supporting his assertions.
Authorities have charged a total of eight individuals, including the Bhatts, in connection with the case. The investigation is still underway. The court's decision to place the couple in judicial custody marks a significant development in this case, which has garnered attention due to the involvement of well-known figures and the large sum of money involved.
